The following article was written by Adam Kirsch and was published by the Wall Street Journal (WSJ) last June 20, 2020.
In this article, Kirsch reintroduces transhumanism and its promise of “overcoming aging, cognitive shortcomings, involuntary suffering and our confinement to planet Earth”.
Kirsch goes on to discuss how transhumanism hopes to achieve immortality. Some of the examples he cites include nanobots that repair damage and halt aging, genetic engineering, and artificial superintelligence. He says, “Ultimately, however, the hope is that we won’t just use computers – we’ll become them”.
Some of the well-known supporters of the transhumanist moment includes Jeff Bezos, Peter Thiel and Elon Musk [yes, the same one who, just a few years ago, was campaigning against artificial superintelligence, see ELON MUSK AND BILL GATES ON THE HUGE CHALLENGE OF ARTIFICIAL INTELLIGENCE].
Editor’s Note: Though published a year ago, this article is even more relevant today. The world may have locked down due to the coronavirus, but transhumanists never stopped in developing their technologies.
They have made breakthroughs in both nanobots and gene editing [see SCIENTISTS HAVE BUILT AN ARMY OF 1M MICRO ROBOTS THAT CAN FIT INSIDE A HYPODERMIC NEEDLE and NEW CRISPR BREAKTHROUGH CAN TURN GENES ON AND OFF]. In just a few weeks, Jeff Bezos will go to space, making him the first of many billionaires seeking to experience suborbital space flight.[efn_note]https://edition.cnn.com/2021/06/07/tech/jeff-bezos-space-blue-origin-new-shepard-flight-scn/index.html[/efn_note] Meanwhile, Elon Musk’s Neuralink is rushing to develop the integration of humans and computers [read NEURALINK MAY START IMPLANTING COMPUTER CHIPS IN HUMANS THIS 2021].
All these are happening even as millions of people around the world are suffering from hunger and poverty. This fact alone brings us to a painful conclusion: the projects of transhumanism are only for those who can afford it [this idea has been explored by several articles we have published on this site, see TRANSHUMANISM: IMMORTALITY FOR THOSE WHO CAN AFFORD IT and RADICAL LIFE EXTENSION IS NOT MEANT FOR EVERYBODY].
