The following article was written by Tom Ward and was published by Futurism last August 18, 2017.
In it, Ward discusses the many paths to human immortality afforded to us by modern technology. For this article, however, Ward focuses on the 2045 movement which offers four avenues to attain human immortality.
- Avatar A is a robotic copy of a human body that can be controlled remotely using brain-computer interference. This was slated for 2015 to 2020 and has already been achieved.[efn_note]Man with brain implant on Musk’s Neuralink: “I would play video games”, First commercial brain computer interface is entering human trials[/efn_note]
- Instead of merely controlling the body, Avatar B seeks to implant the brain into the body itself. This will enable humans to transfer brains to a body that could be “modified, augmented, or updated”. This is slated to be achieved between 2020 to 2025. A series of preliminary experiments have been conducted to this end, but none so far have succeeded on living humans.[efn_note]World’s first human head transplant successfully performed on a corpse, scientists say, Transplant success reported with part of a mouse’s brain[/efn_note].
- Avatar C is a completely robotic body that a similarly artificial brain could be transplanted to. This would require a technology that would allow human consciousness to be uploaded. The 2045 movement hopes to achieve this between 2030-2035. Based on current tech news, we now have the technology to build this, but there is no indication of how effective this hardware will be at downloading consciousness.[efn_note]WE COULD BUILD AN ARTIFICIAL BRAIN RIGHT NOW, BrainOS: A Novel Artificial Brain-Alike Automatic Machine Learning Framework, 1000X More Efficient Neural Networks: Building An Artificial Brain With 86 Billion Physical (But Not Biological) Neurons, Scientists Are Closer to Making Artificial Brains That Operate Like Ours Do, Artificial Brain Cells Implanted In Patient The Procedure Is The First Of Its Kind. - We know very little about Avatar D, except that it is intended as a “hologram-like avatar” or a “substance-independent mind”. This is slated for 2040 to 2045.
Editor’s Note: Even though this article was years ago, we are now seeing the acceleration towards the goals of the 2045 movement. We are also seeing that the timeline they presented in the article was not really chronological. Instead, research on all four is being done simultaneously.
The experimentation has also led “them” to realize that some paths are easier to implement than others. For example, brain transplantation may be far off into the future[efn_note]https://www.wired.com/story/if-you-transplant-human-head-does-consciousness-follow/, https://neuroscience.stanford.edu/news/brain-transplants-are-they-possible, https://mindmatters.ai/2021/03/are-human-brain-transplants-even-possible/[/efn_note], and a “hologram-like avatar” more achievable. The question now is not: “Can we create immortality” but rather, “Is it possible to transfer consciousness to another body”?
Like brain transplantation, downloading of consciousness is impossible, [see WHY MATERIALISM CANNOT EXPLAIN CONSCIOUSNESS, MATERIALIST THEORIES OF CONSCIOUSNESS IS NOT PLAUSIBLE, NEW FOUNDATIONS FOR A SCIENCE OF CONSCIOUSNESS, THE CAMBRIDGE DECLARATION ON CONSCIOUSNESS, IS TRUE ARTIFICIAL CONSCIOUSNESS POSSIBLE?].
