The following article was published by the BBC last May 27, 2021. It features an interview with Microsoft president, Brad Smith.

Smith shares his concern for China’s increasing use of artificial intelligence (AI) technology to monitor its citizens. He says, “If we don’t enact laws that will protect the public in the future, we are going to find the technology racing ahead, and it’s going to be very difficult to catch up”.

Smith goes on to detail how aspects of George Orwell’s 1984 is already becoming a reality in several areas in the world.

Editor’s Note: Though the BBC article was focused mainly on China, the truth is that this issue can also be raised with Big Tech in general.

Artificial intelligence systems are taking over our lives. At present, we know of social media giants controlling speech. But unknown to us, surveillance is also happening on a much larger scale. How can governments protect their citizens when they are the ones who are initiating these surveillance systems?

What we have today is a massive case of conflict of interest, and of governments forgetting their sacred oath to protect the rights of people.
