In this 2016 article for Aeon, author Stuart Kauffman asserts that the universe is far too complex to have been created purely by material interactions. According to Kauffman, there isn’t enough time for the universe to create all the materials needed to create life.

Implications for AI

If all things in nature can be traced back to matter, then the universe would need much more time before a life form like humans could emerge. And yet, here we are, existing, creating, and contemplating our very existence. Sheer logic shows us that scientific materialism cannot be the only purveyor of truth, that there is possibly another force that has enabled our physical reality to emerge.
