In this July 31, 2017 article for The Daily Mail, Alexander Thomas talks about how transhumanists hope to transform our societies through technology. He talks about how “nanotechnology, biotechnology, information technology, and cognitive science” are giving rise to a new world that is in the domain of science fiction.
Thomas cites David Pearce, a leading proponent of transhumanism who said: “If we want to live in paradise, we will have to engineer it ourselves. If we want eternal life, then we’ll need to rewrite our bug-ridden genetic code and become god-like … only hi-tech solutions can ever eradicate suffering from the world. Compassion alone is not enough.”
Unfortunately, this use of high technology is not for everyone. To access this new technology, one must engage in a new kind of capitalism that would systematically marginalize large sectors of society.
Editor’s Note: What kind of future can we expect from transhumanism? We encourage you to read this entire article to get a glimpse of the future to expect. Afterward, we hope you can try to answer this question: is this the kind of future you want to bequeath your children?
