Can you consider a man-made robot made of living cells a new life form?

Using a combination of artificial intelligence (AI) and biotechnology, a team of scientists and roboticists claims that they have developed a new life form which they described as “a new class of artifact: a living, programmable organism”. These new artifacts called xenobots are less than 1mm long and made up of thousands of living cells.

This article from Phys Org published last January 20, 2020 details how xenobots work, as well as the issues and concerns they raise.

Editor’s Note: This article raises some concerns about how we define living vs. non-living things. Also, as these xenobots are artificially created, should they be considered a new life form?
