In this article for War On The Rocks, Molly Kovite, Senior Legal Adviser for the International Humanitarian Law Department of the American Red Cross talks about the benefits of XAI or explainable AI.

This article is an example of the kind of discussions happening in the development of autonomous AI weapons, which tends to glorify AI and highlight the fallibility of human cognitive processes. While XAI can diminish unnecessary suffering at war, it is important to remember that many AI today have biases which could lead to errors and in effect, to more, if not greater, suffering [see AI Is Biased Against The Poor and People of Color, Gender Bias Could Worsen With AI for more concrete examples].
