The following is a February 2020 article written by Kuba Shand-Baptiste for The Independent. In the article, Shand-Baptiste discusses the results of a review conducted by Big Brother Watch showing that automatic facial recognition (AFR) wrongly identified people atleast 90% of the time. the likelihood of false positives increases for people of color and women.

Shand-Baptiste also raises some concerns about how data from AFR technologies are used and processed.

Editor’s Note: Marketing for facial recognition technologies (FRT) are already underway, but the issues it raised a year ago remains un-addressed. We cannot keep on accepting these kinds of technologies without understanding their unintended consequences, for if a simple FRT can make dramatic impacts on our societies, imagine what damage a true AI can make.
