In this June 21, 2021 article published by Bloomberg, Stephanie Bodoni reports on the increasing clamor for a general ban on the use of artificial intelligence to identify people within the European Union (EU).
Heads of the European Data Protection Board and the European Data Protection Supervisors said in a statement, “Applications such as live facial recognition interfere with fundamental rights and freedoms to such an extent that they may call into question the essence of these rights and freedoms”.
Editor’s Note: The renewed call for a ban on the use of remote biometric identification in public spaces is a recognition of the risks of facial recognition to human freedom. While this article only covers countries in the EU, we are hopeful that this standard will be adopted in all countries around the world.
