Over the past few months, we have written about the ethics of AI development, but have failed to define what ethics is and why it is important to consider. In this article written by Dr. Pramila Srivastava, a scholar and educator, she distinguishes the differences of the terms “morality” and “ethics”, and how each of these concepts are related to spirituality. Towards the end of her article, she talks about the importance of establishing new moral values in order to create a balance in society, and within the human being.
Implications for AI
Are the ethics of our modern era supportive of a holistic, interdependent, and creative society? Will creating AI that are as intelligent (if not more) than humans create ethics that are supportive of a culture that is inclusive, reverent, and grateful?
